For Lucky Jewel’s sophomore collection, Olive Woodward, Shay Gallagher, and Lola Dement Myers continue their exploration of discipline through production. Acknowledging the nuance of what it means to “get dressed,” a focus on the beauty of the dedication remains at the forefront of Lucky Jewel’s design and process. Establishing brand pillars by tapping into latent consistencies, the trio continues to cultivate a singular definition of sentimentality as a means of measuring power and potency in relation to value and vibe. A visual tension is present in the work as the three pose the question – what does it means to pair your gym shorts with a well-tailored designer piece and universally coveted boots? The answer is a reflection of themselves.
As Woodward, Gallagher, and Myers themselves evolve (see synonyms for: mature) they hedge upon the subtleties of presentation. There is a sense of refinement to the collection’s offering as the use of unconventional materials like foam, mesh, tyvek, and vinyl, transcend DIY-adjacencies and unlock the emotions we liken to certain textures, evoking nostalgia in new contexts. Momentumbecomes meta through processes like the scanning of foam dresses into digital prints that are then transferred onto silk. Garments are fully-finished and intentionally tailored in silhouettes that still reflect the ha-ha joie de vivre of being potentially too provocative in “professional” settings. Woodward, Gallagher and Myers emphasize that SS24 is simply about the honest desire and drive to make, encapsulating a sense of lost purity while allowing the multiplicities of the self, versions old and new, to dance with one another. What we are left with are exploratory arrangements that tell earnest stories of personal discovery rather than make premeditated or didactic statements. We are doing this because it feels good.”

“THE LUCKY JEWEL STORE IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE COLLECTIVE’S CONTINUED EVOLUTION AS IT ACTIVELY DEFIES TRADITIONAL NORMS OF HOW WE PERCEIVE THE EXPERIENCE OF SHOPPING ITSELF. LUCKY JEWEL HAS LONG SINCE CHAMPIONED THE BELIEF THAT “SHOPPING IS A FEELING” AND WITH A PERMANENT RETAIL LOCATION, THE COLLECTIVE NOW HAS A SPACE TO CULTIVATE THAT FEELING THROUGH AS IT PUTS EMOTIONAL EXCHANGE AND COLLABORATIVE EXPERIENCES AHEAD OF COMMERCE. EVERYTHING IN THE 1,000 SQUARE FOOT SPACE WAS CONSTRUCTED AND TOUCHED BY THE HANDS OF THE COLLECTIVE’S CREATIVE PRINCIPLES, SHAY GALLAGHER, OLIVE WOODWARD AND LOLA DEMENT MYERS, WHO ALSO SELECTED THE 50+ STOCKISTS CARRIED IN THE STORE – INCLUDING THEIR OWN LINE WHICH DEBUTED IN SEPTEMBER 2022.
THERE IS A DISTINCT HISTORY DATING BACK TO 2018 LINKED TO LUCKY JEWEL’S COMMUNITY OF MAKERS THAT ALLOWS THE SHOP TO FUNCTION AS A LIVING VESTIBULE OF SENTIMENTALITY. IN TURN, THIS PHYSICAL SPACE WILL NOT HAVE A FIXED IDENTITY OR FORMAT BUT WILL WRITHE, SHIFTING TO BECOME WHATEVER THE COLLECTIVE AND ITS COMMUNITY NEEDS IT TO BE – A GALLERY, A SHOWROOM, A PLACE TO RENDEZVOUS, A HOME.”

For its sixth iteration, Lucky Jewel presents its first formal body of work taking shape as a runway show. Past iterations of Lucky Jewel have typically involved world-building in temporary spaces – as the New York-based fashion + arts collective headed by Olive Woodward, Shay Gallagher, and Lola Dement Myers – have transformed galleries, apartments and clubs alike into installations that house somatic group shows. During these events, shopping as a practice is explored as Lucky Jewel’s community of makers create objects of sentimental value with singular narratives to be bought and sold – yet the real exchange can’t be counted, it is felt but intangible, belonging purely to the realm of emotion.
As Lucky Jewel creates environments that engender deeper connection between makers and the wider community, unique energies are cultivated within. These energies linger and continue to inform its amorphous evolution but through this iteration, Lucky Jewel gives itself a platform so that it can explore its own essence. By recollecting and re-collecting what was cultivated over the years spanning back to its genesis at Laura (a shared living and art space) in Chicago in 2018, materials that were held onto find renewed purpose, individual practices coalesce and a new voice emerges. Sentimentality takes on a new definition as it aligns with this notion of giving oneself back to oneself.
The collection itself, designed by Woodward and Gallagher, is the translation of these energies into something wearable. There is an active play on our quotidian that questions what it means to work and play, to fantasize and live – the pseudo simulacra of existence. With studded g-strings, foam purses, ultra low-rise business skirts and repurposed suiting materials transformed into tube-tops, there’s an innate humor to Lucky Jewel’s outlook. What happens when we become a caricature of ourselves? What does it mean to perform? We can’t draw the line but we can feel it.

In late 2018 the first Lucky Jewel was staged in Chicago at art and living space Laura. Drawing on friend Vivian Xu’s instagram account lucky_jewel_iwantt, a collection of beloved, esoteric Ebay finds, the group presented an array of similarly precious objects in an ambiguously domestic setting. Local and non-local makers contributed useable art objects, clothes, accessories, and housewares for sale, all sentimental fragments of individual narratives in some sort of shared world. Participants and visitors celebrated sharing, exchanging, and craft — the honest, emotional sensation of shopping.
Lucky Jewel is an opportunity for experimentation and fulfillment, a fluid collective and amorphous retail experience. Locations, artists, and organizers vary but the ephemeral shop’s mission is constant. After two quiet years the fourth iteration, curated and built by Olive Woodward, Shay Galla, Mimi Bahk, and Lola Dement Myers, takes place in New York City, serving to formalize a body of radical work and reconnect Lucky Jewel’s sprawling network. The store’s intimate interior, constructed from found and repurposed materials, is hopeful, demonstrating how longevity and economy are indebted to our personal attachments.
